Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and is consistently yielding flavor profiles that aren’t found anywhere else in the world. The varieties have been there so long that they have all cross-pollinated to the point of being fully heirloom.

Our Hambela Guji comes from the Hambela Washing Station in the Guji region of Ethiopia. Hambela operates a coffee plantation and partners with more than 1000 farmers to source coffee. They are committed to working with the local farmers to improve quality and productivity.

Hambela has been supplying coffee to the auction for over 20 years, but was only established as a coffee exporter in 2014. They own 3 washing stations: two in Guracho village and one in the Hambela District.

The Guji region is named for one of the tribes of the Oromo and is one of the administrative zones of the Oromia region. The zone was created in 2002 when the uplands of Borena zone were split to create it. The Guji region enjoys ideal coffee growing conditions. Its volcanic soil is bursting with nutrients, creating a deep red and brown top-layer of soil. The region’s high altitude, bi-modal rainfall pattern, and dry weather allow for the cherries to develop slowly.

We are experiencing deep brown sugar sweetness, silky body, grape, and black tea. This coffee tastes great just about any way you brew it, but we were finding the C70 was really letting the things we like most about this coffee shine – the body and sweetness with light fruit characteristics, balancing everything out. We were also achieving similar results with the Kalita Wave at the same brew ratio, but at a 3:30 brew time.

We felt this coffee was incredible as a single origin espresso shot. The body and sweetness create a structure for the acidity and florals to really shine here. We were getting white grape, jasmine, orange, and sweet tea.
