This coffee is the second lot we’re releasing in our 2017 experimental nanolot-series.  From the Panorama plot of the Peixoto family farm, this lot was dried using a derivative of the natural process in what we call the chama escura (or “dark ember”) method.  This coffee has all of the properties of our Familia Peixoto coffee, only with a livelier juiciness and a pronounced fruit undertone. Fans of our Beira da Estrada nanolot are going to love this one.  There is also a profound story behind this coffee (see below).  As an orphaned lot that was harvested just prior to its trees being struck by a rare frost (unfortunately, killing the entire plot) this 4-bag nanolot represents a truly limited-edition coffee.

The Story Behind Panorama

When we say coffee farming is not for the faint of heart, we are not joking.  Last year, our owner Julia Peixoto got to partake in the harvest of this nanalot, and turn it as it was drying on our patio.  She and her father, Jose Augusto Peixoto, left the farm to visit other coffee growing regions of Brazil when one cold night he told her “I have this weird feeling that we are going to get frost at the farm tonight”.  She shrugged and said “Dad, there is no frost in the forecast for our region”, and her Dad replied “but I felt this exact same cold feeling on my ankles 22 years ago when we got frost at our farm”.

The next morning, sure enough, Dad called the farm to receive the news that the Panorama plot woke up covered in frost.  Two days later, when Julia and her Dad returned to the farm, they saw the devastation first hand.  20,000 trees which were healthy and a vibrant green a week before, were killed by frost.  The pictures below show the moment when they walked among the dead trees tallying their loss.

In releasing this lot, we are paying homage to those trees and farmers who produced this beautiful coffee we are brewing today, but which will never again be available.  This is our tribute to Mother Nature, loving enough to give life, tough enough to take it away.

$1.00 from each bag sold of this Panorama nanolot will be donated back to the farm to help replant coffee trees on the Panorama plot.
